I owned a Lumia 900, and then I upgraded to the Lumia 920 when Windows Phone 8 launched. After that a funny thing happened, I left the Windows Phone ecosystem and got myself a Moto X running Android. Though I loved the Window Phone operating system, there were many things missing that were bugging me on a daily basis. There were both business tools, and personal fun that Windows Phone users did not get to be a part of.
When Nokia launched the 6 inch Lumia 1520 I ran to the Microsoft store to take a look. The first thing that came to mind was “holy sh*t, this thing is huge”! I even held it up to my face so my wife could take a picture of how ridiculous this thing was. Who would want to use such a device? Two weeks ago I got a chance to get a 1520, and I took it. So, who would want to use such a device? This guy! After two weeks I can say that I will not be going back to the Moto X or any other phone in the near future. The Lumia 1520 is for me, and it might just be for you too.
The first thing you notice when you turn on the phone is the screen. It is bright, it is clear, and it is perfect. Windows Phone running on a 1080p device shows the OS in a whole new light. You can fit more tiles on your screen, and all the colors just pop. Browsing the internet on a 6 inch device is a pleasure. The text is a perfect size, and you never find yourself squinting or saving that long article to read later on a bigger device. Watching a hockey game via the NBC Sports Extra app or a movie on Netflix is very enjoyable. You quickly forget you are watching on your phone. Then there is the camera. I am not a professional photographer, but the 20MP camera is terrific. I am a user that just snaps a photo on the auto settings, and the 1520 makes me look like a pro.
There are still some issues with the Windows Phone ecosystem, but many of those get fixed each day. Just this week Facebook launched their messenger app which was one of the reasons I went to the Moto X. We are just weeks away from the big Windows Phone 8.1 update which will bring many enhancements that are needed. Since I left a few short months ago many of the big name apps are in the store now. Netflix, Vine, Beats Audio, and more are now available.
We talk all the time about finding the perfect 8 inch tablet to go along with our phone. In the last few months there have been a number of new Windows 8 tablets to join the ranks of the iPad mini and Android devices. Well I have found my small tablet, and it is also my phone. I now have zero interest in a device that sits between my phone and my 10 inch tablet. If you are hesitant about using a phone this big, don’t be. Go to the store and play with it. You will be very happy with what you find.
